Oprah coined the phrase “my ah ha moment.” We all know when we have those “ah ha moments” when the light bulb goes on in our head, that signal that says to us “I get it!” When I think back so many times while in school I would have that moment, that instant when I understood the teacher and got what she was teaching. It feels good to have those moments.
When out and about looking for birds to photograph there are what I call the “WOW” moments, when something unexpected happens. You are walking along or standing still and out of the blue there it is, that moment that just makes you say “WOW.” That is what went through my mind when I got these shots of the Indigo Bunting. I had been looking for this bird for years visiting many parks and preserves in search of the Indigo Bunting.

This week while walking back to the car kind of disappointed that I didn’t get what I would call decent shots of the baby hawk chicks I have been following and out of the blue there they were. There must have been 20 or more, male and female feeding on the seeds of the tall grass. It was a sight that makes your heart lift up and say thank you God. They continued to feed for 15 to 20 minutes. They were so beautiful landing on the tall grass as it swayed in the wind. Getting good pictures was difficult, but as hard as it was to focus on each bird, it was even more challenging to keep looking through the lens. A part of me wanted to stand watch them without taking their picture.
Being from Kentucky and a Wildcat basketball fan the color of these birds reminded me of the Big Blue, fast and nimble, dead-eye on the target.
I hope to see the Indigo Buntings again as they are moving through this area in April and going back north.
